WITH A COMMUNITY FOCUS
The Gowanus Neighborhood Rezoning was overwhelmingly approved by the City Council in November 2021, following an in-depth community planning process that culminated in a comprehensive blueprint that won the enthusiastic support of a broad coalition of community stakeholders representing virtually every significant civic organization and community group in Gowanus, joined by leading citywide advocacy organizations.

As part of the final passage of the Gowanus Neighborhood Rezoning, the City Administration memorialized its commitment to realizing these community benefits in a historic agreement reflecting $250 million in City investments to housing, infrastructure, public space, community amenities, and workforce and business support programs, as well as approximately $200 million to address priority capital needs in adjacent NYCHA developments.
These commitments by the City are in addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars of private investment that will result in the creation of new publicly accessible open space along the Canal; nearly 3,000 new units of affordable housing; infrastructure improvements at development sites; and dedicated space for artists and makers in new developments, preserving Gowanus’s unique character.
