ABOUT US
Gowanus Forward is comprised of the owners of fifteen of the largest sites being developed in the Gowanus Neighborhood Rezoning, including nine large waterfront properties along the Gowanus Canal owned by PMG, The Domain Companies, Monadnock Development, Midwood Investment & Development, Tavros Holdings, Lantower Residential, Tankhouse, and RFR Holding. The Domain Companies and Tavros Holdings, and another member of Gowanus Forward, Avery Hall Investments, are also developing six properties at non-waterfront locations. Many of us have been a part of this neighborhood for years, and all of us support the community’s vision for Gowanus’s future. We are committed to a Gowanus that maintains the neighborhood’s unique character and increases its diversity while building for future resilience and sustainability. As part of the rezoning, it will be our responsibility to:
Build abundant affordable housing in the neighborhood.
Clean up dangerous contaminants from the land along the waterfront and create attractive, publicly accessible open space abutting the canal.
Invest in stormwater and wastewater management systems to support reduction of CSOs and the Canal cleanup efforts.
Provide space for light industrial and arts-related uses, community facility space, and repair and production services.
Create unionized building services jobs.
ABOUT THE REZONING
After decades of inaction, an in-depth and inclusive community planning process was undertaken that produced an areawide rezoning plan by the New York City Department of City Planning. The City-sponsored Gowanus rezoning, which was approved by the City Council on November 23, 2021, achieves multiple goals to support mixed-use growth with below-market housing, maintain and expand dedicated spaces for commercial businesses and light industry, activate ground floors, increase publicly accessible open space, and bolster neighborhood-wide environmental resiliency.
